Chemical contamination alters the interactions between bacteria and phytoplankton

نویسندگان

چکیده

Bacteria and phytoplankton are key players in aquatic ecosystem functioning. Their interactions mediate carbon transfer through the trophic web. Chemical contamination can alter function diversity of bacterioplankton, with important consequences for The aim present study was to assess impact chemical on between both biological compartments. Two contrasting marine coastal ecosystems, offshore waters lagoon waters, were exposed (artificial or produced from resuspension contaminated sediment) microcosms four seasons characterized by distinct communities. Offshore a complex phytoplankton–bacterioplankton network predominance positive compartments, especially Haptophyta, Cryptophyta, dinoflagellates. In contrast, simpler prevalence negative Ochrophyta, flagellates. Contamination an artificial mix pesticides trace metal elements resulted decrease number waters. Resuspension sediment also altered release nutrients stored allowed growth nutrient limited species marked interactions, whereas mostly observed. Overall, this showed that significant effects functioning anthropogenic ecosystems.

Chemical interactions between marine macroalgae and bacteria

We review research from the last 40 yr on macroalgal–bacterial interactions. Marine macroalgae have been challenged throughout their evolution by microorganisms and have developed in a world of microbes. Therefore, it is not surprising that a complex array of interactions has evolved between macroalgae and bacteria which basically depends on chemical interactions of various kinds. Bacteria spec...

Competition between phytoplankton and bacteria: exclusion and coexistence.

Resource-based competition between microorganisms species in continuous culture has been studied extensively both experimentally and theoretically, mostly for bacteria through Monod and Contois "constant yield" models, or for phytoplankton through the Droop "variable yield" models. For homogeneous populations of N bacterial species (Monod) or N phytoplanktonic species (Droop), with one limiting...

Interactions between diatoms and bacteria.

Diatoms and bacteria have cooccurred in common habitats for hundreds of millions of years, thus fostering specific associations and interactions with global biogeochemical consequences. Diatoms are responsible for one-fifth of the photosynthesis on Earth, while bacteria remineralize a large portion of this fixed carbon in the oceans. Through their coexistence, diatoms and bacteria cycle nutrien...
